Christina and I won a honorable mention in a small competition held in Calgary. We won an honorable mention for our entry.. which is great because we had such a fun time working on it together.. the hard work paid off!.. below are images of our entry boards. The idea is to create a pavilion that display art in a public manner.. In our case it was digital art in a parking lot... Our idea was to use the pavilion to transform the parking lot into an urban drive in theatre by night and a cultural billboard or notifier by day. This is the link to the competition website.. http://www.art-city.ca/

ARchitecture and the built environment. This building used to be used by a food distributor, however I noticed one day the distributor was gone...?.. and I knew something was up... as it turns out one of my friends; his office is designing a building to be built there. I believe it will be 75' tall due to a city zoning regulation which will be taller than my window... but not too much taller.. so I should still get sun in the afternoon... .. This way we don't have to depend on the City of Toronto to push this forward.. keepin it in the private sector has it's advantages.
ARchitecture and the built environment. I am not against development for those with high income, however, I am cautious of developement that is only for high income, or any income for that matter. Part of what makes an urban area interesting and diverse is diversity in incomes and uses, amongst many other factors. So, I propose a multi-income, multi-density housing solution just South of Delancy St. A proposition that is a series of strands that are 25' wide (similar to exisitng bldg.s on the site) varying in height to form low-density and high-density living solutions. The roof scape is thought of as a secondary terrain that forms public and private park space the services both the community and the individuals living in the proposal.
ARchitecture and the built environment. This is our trophy! Last year a firm called Rogers Marvel won. I guess all that time i spent on crew for Mr. Pilon's Boat when we raced in Lake Ontario came in handy.. I was on foredeck during this race, so i took care of the Genoa Sail, it's the one at the front of the boat.. actually in the pic of the trophy to the right, the Genoa would be the smaller sail of the two, the one that is billowing outwards.

There was six of us as crew, Richard Gluckman was the skipper, and one of the six was from the yacht club, he was there to offer advice and make sure nothing goes wrong.

So the race was a lot of fun. We had two races; in the first we came in 6th and in the second we came in 2nd. The winner of the regatta was whomever had the the best finishes accross the two races, and we actually won!..

The whole time they were calling out the names of the firms we kept on looking at each other asking when are they going to call us.. until they reached the second place finisher, we were like, did the disqualify us?.. another boat actually hit us as we rounded the mark, and there was some debate as to whom was resposible, must have been the other guy cause damn we won!.. suckas!

the other firms were, KPF, Fox & Fowle, Rogers Marvel, Ariel (who ran into us), Cesar Pelei, SOM, HOK and more..

here's the website for it if yer interested...
ARchitecture and the built environment. He's known for not knowing much, however, what he does know is bountiful amounts of useless information, and annuciating really well...

i quote:

"More of Keith's useless but fascinating knowledge:

New Orlean's is built on a swamp that is constantly sinking. Also, the Mississippi River delta, unlike most other large river systems, deposits silt and sediment along it's banks creating natural levees. As more silt settles on the river bottom, the water level rises and the levees are built up with more silt. In essence, the river is building and extending itself further into the Gulf of Mexico.

This has been another one of Keith's useless but fascinating knoweldge. "

However, Keith has failed to answer my actual question: "why was New orlean's built where it was".. although i do appreciate his knowledge, i didn't really need to know that.. same old Keith!

Keith do you know why New Orleans was built where it was?.. maybe i should ask Rebecca.... she would know for sure, or at least know where to find out...

happy birthday keith incase i forgot to mention that when i sat next to you at your birthday party....
ARchitecture and the built environment. My mum, dad, Shaun and I drove up on friday morning and booked into the hotel on friday afternoon. There was lots of laughs and good memories of the weekend that i'm sure i will remember later on in life, but right now, i can't recall.. oh.. here's one.. um purple elephant, dishwasher.. that's an inside joke between shaun and I, and i'm sure I got it wrong.. but he knows what i mean.. It was great to hang out with mum and dad especially up north. Driving the boat on Saturday was really nice, and dad enjoyed that a lot, just like me and shaun.. Shaun's first time driving a boat.. shaun's first time being in a small personal size boat!.. way to go shaun..

Here are the wedding pictures from shaun

It was great to see some highschool friends ofcourse!.. and to swim at heather's cottage. It was awesome to catch up with Debbie, who i've been pining to talk to. Way to go DEBBIE you won a supreme court case!.. woo hoo! I've been braggin about you in NYC. Meeting Clayton's special lady was nice too.. he's a lucky guy,, and she's a lucky woman.

ONce i returned back to NYC, i learned that i would be the skipper of our firms entry into the architects regatta, because i have the most sailing experience... What this means is that i would steer a 24' sailboat in a race with 10 other sailboats, all comprised of architects. wow.. what a responsibility. the boat has a crew of 6 people all from the firm. So i would have to tell these people what to do... that's probably the most stressful thing.. I would be fine just doing it myself and racing, but being the captain of a crew of 6 is a little unerving..

Today I went to the VICE clothing sale. VICE has a store in Toronto, that i like to go to a lot, but the store in NYC is small.. and expensive. However, the store was having an attic sale, so a lot of clothes was on display, and really really cheap.. 75% off.. so a shirt that 100, was 25,, and when we bought multiple items there was a further discount, and then Christina asked if these prices were final, and the teller gave us a further discount.. so it was great, we got some much need clotes for summer time at work for a great great price.. never buy anything for full price again!.. there will be sales..just look in the right places, like Time Out NYC.

toodle loo for now!

ARchitecture and the built environment. I have been developing a theory on the place of computer renderings and the use of the computer in the architecture practise, but it'll be such a long post that you'll probably fall asleep. Perhaps I'll have to tell you about it over a smoothie or milkskake..

So the website (ryarch.com), will be up soon. Dad needs to set up the domain name, and point it to the Pair server. Oh and by the way this my dad's elevator website.. one of many really... Dad and I have been working on this for some time.. If i point to it from my blog, it will better my dad's website's search engine positioning.

I'm working on the website design curently.. really really basic.. i like the all white scheme, and the black outlines.. very clean. very simple. straightforward navigation too, with hopefully stunning images; you tell me. Just working out a few kinks. I'm utilizing CSS and a little bit of flash .
ARchitecture and the built environment.
